On Friday, June 13th, 2008, people across America were shocked and saddened to hear of Tim Russert's death. His legacy is unimpeachable; he will be remembered as a truly great American journalist.

Senator Dole had a long relationship with Mr. Russert and his iconic Sunday morning show, Meet the Press. Dole appeared on the show more than anyone else, a total of 63 times.

Mr. Russert's kindness and his tough questions were remembered by Sen. Dole on the June 15th, 2008 special edition of Meet the Press:

"I liked him...Our fathers had a lot in common, you know. And I had a lot in common with his father. I mean, we had kind of hardscrabble times...You know, you couldn't come in on a Sunday without Tim mentioning his father or Luke. But just a, you know, that kind of atmosphere and a kind of smile and, you know, I wouldn't say it was fun. I mean, it was, you know, but he always said, `Let's make news.'"

Upon hearing the news of Russert's death, Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole issued a statement expressing their sadness:

"It is a shock. He was a great and longtime friend. No one was more fair and more objective than Tim Russert. Certainly our hearts go out to his family; his son, Luke; his wife, Maureen; and beloved father, Big Russ. He was today's giant in the world of television news. A great loss to his loyal viewers, to NBC, but above all to journalism across the board."
