Use of Collections
The Dole Photograph Collection is open to the public by appointment. Nonetheless, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with donors. Reproductions of images are available for purchase by completing and returning the Photograph Order Form.

Scope and Content
The Archive of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics houses approximately 25,000 photographs relating to the personal life and political career of Robert J. Dole (1923- ). The photographs range in size from wallet-size to oversize and include both color and black and white.
The photo collection spans the dates 1880-2005 and contains images relating to Robert J. Dole's childhood and youth, living family members and ancestors, military service, legal career as Russell Kansas County Attorney, four campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the eight years spent as congressman from Kansas' 6th and later 1st Congressional Districts (1961-1968), his subsequent 28 year Senate career (1968-1996), and the post-Senate years.
Other individuals who appear in the photographs include American presidents and foreign heads of state, senators, legislators and dignitaries, as well as constituents and staffers.
While the majority of the images in the photograph collection were donated by Senator Dole, several important smaller groups of personal photos were donated by his sisters, Norma Jean (Dole) Steele and Gloria (Dole) Nelson and friends of the Dole family. In addition to photographic prints, collections include negatives, slides, and digital images of Institute events.
Arrangement
The audiovisual collections are organized in indices arranged by subject, date, and event. Archivists are able to fill patron requests for photographs of individuals and specified subjects or events upon receipt of a completed registration form. The same guidelines apply to the Archive's sound recordings and motion pictures. The photographs are currently organized into the following groups:

Fee Schedule for Photographic Reproductions
Charges for Copy Services Provided by Staff
- Payment in full is required in advance
- A reproduction request for permission to copy each item must be completed before a request for copying can be processed. If the images(s) is to be used for other than personal use a Request for Permission to Publish, Distribute, or Display must also be completed.
- There is a minimum mailing charge of $5.00 per order
- If a negative is not available, add $5.00 for making each copy negative
Black and White or Color Prints
- 5" x 7" or smaller $5.00 per print
- 8" x 10" $7.00 per print
- 11" x 14" $13.00 per print
- 16" x 20" $20.00 per print
- All sizes $5.00 per image
Digital Reproduction Fees
These additional charges may apply
- Photographic Paper Printout (inkjet) $2.00 per sheet
- Note: Photographic requests typically require up to two weeks for completion.
Use of images in Motion Pictures and Television
- Non-commercial broadcast (PBS) $90 per image
- Commercial broadcast $180 per image
- Motion picture $350 per image
Postage and Tax
- Patrons are charged postage when applicable, and Kansas residents are assessed a 7.3% sales tax.
