Mission

The mission of the Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board is to engage University of Kansas students in the efforts of the Institute. By providing support, feedback and participation, the Student Advisory Board shall function to enhance the mission of the Dole Institute to encourage political and civic involvement, to encourage civil discussion on important issues and to emphasize that politics is an honorable profession.

Expectations

The Dole Institute understands that many students who choose to participate in the Student Advisory Board are actively involved in numerous student groups. However, members are expected to attend programs regularly, including evening lectures, Study Groups and Pizza & Politics.

Self-selecting membership is open to all students. A student will remain a member of the group for the duration of his or her college career so long as he or she maintains good attendance and renews his or her membership at the end of every school year.

General meetings will be held once a month. Members must attend 2/3 of general meetings each semester to remain in good standing. Absences will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be cleared prior to the meeting with the appropriate staff member of the Dole Institute of Politics.

Committee meetings will be scheduled at the beginning of each semester by the committee’s chair. Members are expected to serve on one committee, but may choose to serve on multiple. Members must attend 2/3 of their committee meetings to remain in good standing. Committee chairs will be appointed by the Dole Institute of Politics for the 2007-2008 school year; the appointment process should be amended for the following years. There will be no elected positions in the group; rather, the Student Outreach Coordinator, who is employed by the Dole Institute of Politics, will serve as the “Executive Director” of the group. This individual will be responsible for communicating with the group, recording the group’s activities, coordinating the committees and renewing the group’s registration with the Student Involvement and Leadership Center.
