2008 Youth Civic Leadership Institute
Our Kansas high school seniors arrived on Wednesday afternoon, July 16, unpacked their bags in Lewis Residence Hall, and immediately hiked over to the Dole Institute. In addition to an orientation session, the students heard President Harry Truman speak (Niel Johnson's impersonation).
On Thursday they traveled to Topeka to meet with state legislators and to sit at senators' desks in the recently renovated Senate chamber.
Thursday evening students dined with a group of Friends of the Dole Institute.
Friday they had a full morning session of speakers and delivering their impressive project presentations.
Late Friday afternoon, these civic-minded students headed back to their hometowns across Kansas and will continue to serve in their communities.

About the Youth Civic Leadership Institute
The Dole Institute created and sponsors, at no charge to participants, the summer Youth Civic Leadership Institute which hosts 50 high school seniors from across Kansas.
Soon-to-be high school seniors are recommended by hometown administrators and selected by the Dole Institute.
This 3-day program includes public service learning activities, leadership lectures, meetings with legislators in Topeka and overnights in a KU residence hall on campus.
The Dole Institute began this youth leadership program in 2006 and provides the program at no charge.
Students and school administrators are invited to learn more about this program by contacting Barbara Ballard, Dole Institute Associate Director .
The Youth Civic Leadership program is offered with the understanding that “it is in our nation’s best interest that our youth not only become familiar with our system of government, but also explore the variety of opportunities for public service and the potential for developing their leadership.”
